Boston Ferries And Water Taxis

Boston sits on a working harbor, and the water around it carries commuters, day trippers and sightseers every day of the season. The city's boat network has three distinct layers, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake visitors make. There is the Boston Harbor Islands ferry, a scheduled seasonal service to the islands. There are water taxis, on-demand boats that serve the waterfront and the airport. And there are the sightseeing cruises, narrated tours that loop the harbor for an hour or more. Each has its own fares, its own season and its own booking logic, and MBTA commuter ferries form another distinct public transport network.

Short answer

Boston Water Taxi provides on-demand harbor transport, including Logan’s water transportation dock. Its published one-way fare is $20 adult and $10 for children aged 12 and under; round trips are $35 and $15 respectively, checked September 20, 2026.

For an island visit, choose the actual island and both sailings. For sightseeing, compare a harbor loop, sunset cruise or schooner instead. MBTA ferries and direct water taxis remain separate transport choices; their tickets are not included in these outings. Check island ferry dates and destination

This guide pulls all three layers together with verified fares and dates. The Harbor Islands ferry's published schedule runs to 12 October 2026, the MBTA rewrote its transfer rules on 1 September 2026, and the tide gauge at the harbor entrance records a mean range of about 9.49 feet, which changes what the waterfront looks like depending on when you show up. If you are mapping out your whole trip, start with our things to do in Boston overview, then come back here for the water.

What Is The Boston Water Taxi And How Does It Work?

Boston Water Taxi provides on-demand harbor transport, including Logan’s water transportation dock. Its published one-way fare is $20 adult and $10 for children aged 12 and under; round trips are $35 and $15 respectively, checked September 20, 2026. Arrange the pickup with the operator; these are not MBTA fares.

The operator publishes fares and also offers luggage storage at Rowes Wharf. A taxi-plus-storage ticket costs $30 one-way or $45 round-trip. Check the exact service, office access and collection time. Logan’s free shuttle connects the terminal area with the water transportation dock; include that leg in your travel estimate.

Water taxis can suit a waterfront destination, but the total journey includes waiting, the airport shuttle and any walk after landing. They are not automatically fastest. Compare your actual hotel location, baggage and departure time with the Logan-to-downtown guide and getting-around guide.

SL1 is free when boarded at Logan terminals. A water taxi is a separate paid service, so choose it for the actual route and convenience rather than assuming every waterfront hotel makes it better value.

How Do You Ride The Boston Harbor Islands Ferry?

Choose the island and return sailing before buying a ferry ticket. Boston departures to Spectacle and Georges and Hingham departures to Peddocks are different routes. The fare table on the park’s schedule page is labeled 2025; use the current ticket checkout for your 2026 party total. A single island return ticket is not unlimited island hopping.

An island ferry buys transport to the selected island, not a narrated harbor loop. Spectacle Island is about 30 minutes from Boston; Georges is farther out. Leave time ashore and check the final operating return. The shortest or cheapest boat option may instead be an MBTA inner-harbor ferry if an island visit is not your aim.

Island journey What to select Cost check
Boston–Spectacle Timed outward departure; check open-return conditions Current party checkout total
Boston–Georges An operating date for that route Do not assume Spectacle’s fall dates apply
Hingham–Peddocks Separate Hingham departure Include travel to Hingham
Special or discounted ferry day Exact published event and eligibility Ordinary tickets do not confer the special rate
Passengers boarding a ferry at a Boston Harbor island landing

The season structure is the thing to get right, because the islands are not a year-round destination. The published 2026 schedule breaks into three blocks, and the fall block is the shortest and the easiest to miss.

Published fall 2026 route Operating days Last listed date
Boston–Spectacle Thu–Sun September 10–27; Fri–Sun October 2–11 Also Monday October 12
Hingham–Peddocks Thu–Sun September 10–October 11 Also Monday October 12
Boston–Georges Check its own current ticket calendar Do not infer from another island

The official ferry schedule distinguishes routes and seasons. Boston Harbor City Cruises operates the Boston island service. Check the chosen island’s departure dock, calendar and return availability before committing.

If you would rather see the harbor from a narrated boat than commute across it, the sightseeing layer is the next section. But if islands are your goal, book nothing else that day: the ferry schedule, not your energy level, sets the pace.

Curious about a day ashore instead of a harbor loop? Explore the selected-island round-trip ferry option, then check which island and dates are offered. It is not an island-hopping pass or a Hingham–Peddocks ticket; check operating return services and the last boat. Check island ferry dates and destination

What MBTA Fares Apply To Waterfront And Ferry Travel?

A subway ride costs $2.40 and a local bus $1.70, a 1-Day pass is $11.00 and a 7-Day pass $22.50, and since 1 September 2026 the MBTA allows unlimited transfers between subway, bus and ferry within a two-hour window while charging only the highest-priced leg, provided you tap the same payment method on every leg. Express bus fares also dropped to the local $1.70 rate on the same date.

The September 2026 MBTA transfer pilot applies to eligible MBTA journeys using the same payment method. It does not cover private water taxis, sightseeing cruises or a separately sold Harbor Islands ticket. Inner-harbor Zone 1A MBTA ferry trips cost $2.40 full fare; check the exact route and accepted ticket or pass before boarding.

MBTA fare Price Notes
Subway, one-way $2.40 Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Mattapan Trolley, Silver Line SL1-SL3
Local bus, one-way $1.70 Express bus also $1.70 under the pilot
1-Day pass $11.00 24 hours from first use on a CharlieCard
7-Day pass $22.50 7 days from first use on a CharlieCard
Monthly LinkPass $90.00 Rarely worth it for a short visit
A CharlieCard being tapped at an MBTA station fare gate

The pass start-time rule catches people every week. A 1-Day or 7-Day pass loaded on a CharlieTicket starts at the moment of purchase, while the same pass on a CharlieCard starts at first use. Buy on a CharlieCard the night you arrive and your pass is untouched until you first tap it the next morning. The MBTA fare page states this directly, and our CharlieCard and fares guide walks through the whole card system for visitors.

Two service notes matter for waterfront plans. Symphony station on the Green Line E branch has been closed since June with closure scheduled through spring2029, and the MBTA has been running rolling weekend diversions on the central lines through September and October, including a full central Green Line suspension on the weekend of 19 to 20 September 2026. Check the MBTA's own service alerts before a weekend ferry day, because a closure can turn a 15-minute ride to the wharf into a shuttle-bus hour.

Which Boston Harbor Cruises And Tours Are Bookable?

Harbor sightseeing choices include narrated loops, sunset sailings, schooner trips, meal cruises and fast thrill rides. They have different docks and eligibility rules. A duck tour enters the Charles River rather than Boston Harbor. Compare your intended experience and final checkout total; an old starting-price table does not prove which is cheapest.

The one-hour historical cruise offers a narrated harbor loop from Long Wharf, with no island landing. Allow its check-in buffer and some flexibility before your next timed admission. The ticket does not provide transport to another neighborhood or a museum visit.

If a narrated harbor loop sounds appealing, book a historical sightseeing cruise here.

A sightseeing cruise boat passing the Boston waterfront

The 80-minute duck tour combines city streets with about 20 minutes on the Charles River. It is neither a harbor ferry nor a hop-on service. Our Duck Tours guide explains its three departure locations and separate museum admission.

Boat experience Typical duration Important distinction
Historical harbor loop One hour Narration; Long Wharf, no island stop
Narrated sunset cruise 90 minutes Gate C, Rowes Wharf; food and drink extra
Classic schooner sail 90–120 minutes Fan Pier Marina,10 Waterside Avenue; no formal narration
Brunch cruise Two hours Buffet included, drinks extra; separate Rowes Wharf boarding
Codzilla 45 minutes Fast wet ride; age, height and health restrictions
Duck tour About 80 minutes Street circuit plus Charles River

A sunset sailing is a scenery choice, not a guaranteed bargain or promise of clear skies. A standard schooner ticket buys sailing rather than a meal. Meal cruises include specified food but can charge separately for drinks and tips. Longer whale-watching trips go beyond the harbor and need more time; they are a different outing.

One boundary worth drawing: the Swan Boats in the Public Garden are a beloved Boston boat ride, but they are neither a ferry nor a bookable tour product, and their own site currently states they are closed for the season with a return planned for April 2027. Do not build an autumn itinerary around them.

How Do The Tides Shape Boston's Waterfront?

NOAA station8443970 records a mean Boston tidal range of about 9.49 feet. Boston has roughly two high and two low tides per lunar day. Individual predictions differ; a handful of observed highs and lows are not permanent limits. Water levels change gangway angles and the shoreline, so check the dated predictions and actual boarding arrangements.

Most visitors never think about tides until they stand at Long Wharf at low water and see the hull of the seawall exposed, or watch a ferry landing ramp sit at a steep angle. The practical consequences are concrete. Beaches on Spectacle Island change character completely between the tide extremes, harbor-side photographs look like different cities depending on the hour, and gangway gradients vary with tide; confirm boarding assistance and access needs with the operator. The full index of guides sits on Boston Travel Guide.

Exposed rocks and pilings along the Boston Harborwalk at low tide

The NOAA station page for Boston Harbor publishes the predictions, and checking it takes thirty seconds. If a harbor sunset cruise is the centerpiece of an evening, look up that day's high tide: a rising tide near sunset puts more water, more reflection and more boat traffic in the frame. If low tide falls at midday, expect exposed edges and mud flats along the quieter stretches of the Harborwalk.

This is also why the weather station matters. The official Boston climate record comes from Logan Airport, out on a peninsula in the harbor, which makes it a maritime reading. On a sea-breeze afternoon the waterfront can run several degrees cooler than inland neighborhoods, and anyone planning a boat day should dress for the gauge, not the forecast for the suburbs. Our Boston weather by month guide has the full NOAA normals table.

What Should You Know About Logan Airport And The Water?

Logan Airport sits directly on the harbor, and its official transport page lists water taxis among the sanctioned options alongside the free Silver Line SL1 from the terminal curb, the free on-airport shuttle to the Blue Line and the ferry dock, Logan Express buses to Back Bay, Braintree, Framingham and Woburn, and private car services. The Silver Line toward South Station is free from the terminal, so an arriving visitor can reach downtown by transit at no cost.

Logan’s dock is reached by the free airport shuttle; it is not at your terminal door. Boston Water Taxi requests about 45 minutes from dock to terminal when planning an airport-bound trip, in addition to your flight check-in buffer. Its published hours are 8am–8pm May–October and 8am–5pm November–April, with separately arranged after-hours charters.

Check current Massport notices before an airport journey. Runway9/27 rehabilitation’s second phase began August 31,2026 for roughly75 days with limited runway use. Undated bridge, Kidport and roadway notices should not be assigned to2026 automatically. Include the terminal shuttle and flight check-in buffer when planning a water transfer. The Logan Airport guide covers the airport connection.

Logan transport option Fare basis Connection
SL1 from terminals Free outbound South Station and subway connection
Airport shuttle Free Airport station or water transportation dock
MBTA ferry Route-specific public fare Check weekday/seasonal timetable and terminal shuttle
Boston Water Taxi Published passenger fares; extras vary Arrange actual pickup and waterfront stop
Logan Express Destination-specific Check current suburban and Back Bay services
Road taxi or rideshare Metered or app quote Actual destination and traffic

The Silver Line quirk deserves one more sentence because guides get it backwards constantly: the free leg is the one leaving the airport. Board SL1 at the curb and no fare is collected; ride it toward Logan from South Station and you pay the ordinary $2.40. Massport's own page states this in exactly those terms.

When Is The Best Time To Ride The Ferries And Harbor Boats?

Choose a date on the selected island’s calendar, not just any day before October 12. Spectacle’s October fall sailings are Friday–Sunday plus Monday October 12; Peddocks uses a different Hingham schedule. Sightseeing cruises and water taxis publish separate operating dates. Wind and sea conditions matter alongside temperature.

Boston has no wet season and no dry season. The NOAA 1991-2020 normals show every month of the year between 3.21 and 4.30 inches of precipitation, a spread of barely an inch, so picking a "dry month" for a boat day is planning around something that does not exist here. Temperature, daylight and precipitation all vary; monthly totals do not predict rain on your chosen day. The best time to visit Boston guide breaks this down month by month.

A clear summer day over Boston Harbor with sailboats on the water

For a combined day, the pattern that works is a morning Freedom Trail walk, a midday ferry or cruise, and an evening in the North End, which sits directly behind the Long Wharf departure points. The small-group Freedom Trail walk runs 2 hours 30 minutes at from $39 with a 4.9 rating from 7,835 reviews, and it finishes within walking distance of the wharf.

Fall island service is reduced and differs by route. Do not assume that a Thursday Spectacle sailing exists in October, or that Monday October 12 is closed. If your date has no island service, a separately scheduled harbor cruise may fit, but it will not land you on the island. Check weather and the actual operating calendar rather than relying on a “calmest month” claim.

A few practical notes close out the planning picture. Wear layers on any boat, because the harbor wind is real even on warm days and the Logan weather station reads cooler than inland. Book the sightseeing cruises ahead for summer weekends, when the harbor is at its busiest. And if you are pairing a boat day with a ballgame or a big evening out, the red Sox game guide and the things to do in Boston this weekend guide cover the land-side half of the day.

What Should You Do After Your Boat Ride?

The best post-cruise plan is the North End, which sits directly behind the Long Wharf and Aquarium departure points, followed by a walk along the Harborwalk toward the Seaport, and the practical anchor for the whole day is the MBTA Aquarium station on the Blue Line at $2.40 a ride, which puts the ferry dock, the aquarium and the North End within a ten-minute walk of one another.

The geography is the reason this works so well. Long Wharf is the departure point for the harbor cruises and the islands ferry, the New England Aquarium sits at the same wharf, and the North End's restaurant blocks begin two streets inland. A family can split the day: a morning cruise, an aquarium stop, and cannoli in the North End by late afternoon, all without moving the car or hailing a ride. Our Boston with kids guide builds exactly this kind of day.

Families walking along Long Wharf toward the New England Aquarium

For food, the harbor's best-known pairings are lobster rolls and clam chowder, and the North End carries the Italian side of the city's food reputation. The best lobster rolls in Boston guide and the best restaurants in Boston guide cover both, and most of the top picks sit within a short walk of the wharf. Choose dinner before or after the sailing according to its actual departure, return and restaurant hours; ordinary sunset tickets do not include a meal.

Common Questions About Boston Ferries And Water Taxis

How much is the Boston water taxi?

Boston Water Taxi publishes adult and child one-way and return fares; see the dated rates above. Arrange the actual pickup, and price luggage storage or after-hours service separately. The island ferry does not serve Logan and is not an airport-transfer substitute.

Is the Boston Harbor Islands ferry running?

Check the selected route. Spectacle’s published fall service runs through October 12, 2026 with reduced October days; Peddocks departs from Hingham on a different schedule. Do not apply either calendar to Georges automatically.

Does the MBTA go to Logan Airport for free?

The Silver Line SL1 is free leaving the airport, from the terminal curb, as Massport's own page states, and it connects to the subway network at South Station. Riding toward Logan, you pay the ordinary $2.40 subway fare. The free leg is the one departing the airport.

Can you take a ferry from Boston to the Harbor Islands in winter?

No. The 2026 ferry season ends on 12 October 2026, and there is no winter service to the islands. Sightseeing cruises and water taxis continue on their own schedules, but the scheduled islands ferry pauses until spring.

What is the cheapest boat ride in Boston?

An MBTA inner-harbor Zone 1A ferry is a low-cost public option at $2.40 full fare. It is not a narrated tour or island excursion. Compare current totals for the actual journey rather than calling an old sightseeing starting price the cheapest.

Do MBTA transfers work on ferries?

Since 1 September 2026, the MBTA's pilot allows unlimited transfers between subway, bus and ferry within a two-hour window, charging only the highest-priced leg, provided you use the same payment method throughout. The MBTA fare page is the authoritative source for the pilot's terms.
