Boston With Kids Itinerary
Boston rewards families who plan around short legs and long attention spans, because the city's core is compact, its history is outdoor and walkable, and its biggest-ticket attractions sit close to one another. The National Park Service publishes the numbers that make this work: the Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile red-lined route past 16 sites, and the public route is free while several interiors charge. Add the fact that Massport states plainly that the MBTA Silver Line SL1 provides free service between South Station and all airport terminals from the terminal curb, and a family of four can land, ride downtown, and spend a full day sightseeing before paying a single admission fee. This page is part of the Boston Travel Guide family itinerary series.
Short answer
Three days allows a choice of downtown, waterfront and another neighborhood or museum day, with shorter or longer visits adapted to your children. A fourth day can slow the pace without a day trip.

This itinerary is built as three days, but it flexes. Each day is a self-contained cluster, so a family with only two days can drop one without breaking the others, and a family with four can stretch Day 3 or add a day trip. For a general first-visit plan without the kids-first filter, the first time in Boston itinerary covers the same ground with more museum depth.
How Many Days Does A Family Need In Boston?
Three days allows a choice of downtown, waterfront and another neighborhood or museum day, with shorter or longer visits adapted to your children. A fourth day can slow the pace without a day trip. Children eleven and under ride free with a paying adult on MBTA bus and subway. Compare the adults’ actual fares with passes; transit is not automatically $22.50 per adult.
The MBTA fare table lists $11 day and $22.50 seven-day passes. CharlieCard passes begin at first use; CharlieTicket passes begin at purchase. Each fare-paying traveler needs their own supported payment medium/pass. For transfers, that individual should use the same card or device on each eligible leg; do not share one tap or pass across the whole family.
| MBTA fare or pass | Price | Family note |
|---|---|---|
| Subway one-way | $2.40 | Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Mattapan Trolley, SL1-SL3 |
| Local Bus one-way | $1.70 | Express Bus dropped to this rate in the 2026 pilot |
| 1-Day Pass | $11.00 | Unlimited for 24 hours from first use on a CharlieCard |
| 7-Day Pass | $22.50 | Unlimited for 7 days from first use on a CharlieCard |
| Children under 12 | Free | With a paying adult, subway and bus |
Transit reliability is the one thing to check before each day. September 2026 brought rolling weekend diversions across the tourist lines, including a full central Green Line suspension on the weekend of 19 to 20 September, with free shuttle buses provided. The MBTA posts closures on its own site, and a two-minute check the night before beats discovering a shuttle at 9am with a stroller.
Day 1: The Freedom Trail And Faneuil Hall, Built For Short Walks
Day One can be a free public walk from the Common toward Faneuil Hall, with the North End optional. Several historic interiors charge, while free sites still have hours and access rules. Charlestown’s ship and monument require additional walking and are not automatically every child’s preferred stop.
The Freedom Trail Foundation describes the route as 2.5 miles, which sounds long until you break it: Boston Common to Faneuil Hall is the first stretch, and it passes the Granary Burying Ground, where children can hunt for the Franklin headstones, and the Old South Meeting House. The full route detail is in the Freedom Trail attraction guide, including the exact admission table from the National Park Service.
Choose interiors by interest, price and access rather than age stereotypes. At the September 2026 check, Old State/Old South share an $18 adult and $10 ages-six-to-seventeen ticket, with younger children free. Paul Revere House charges $6 adult and $1 ages five to seventeen. Old North and King’s Chapel church have separate tickets; consult the site information for actual conditions.
| Site | Family admission basis | Planning condition |
|---|---|---|
| Old State / Old South | Combined adult $18; ages 6–17 $10 | Check benefit eligibility and access |
| Paul Revere House | Adult $6; ages 5–17 $1 | Year-round seasonal hours |
| Old North | Discovery versus bell format | Confirm exact child age; bell stairs |
| King’s Chapel church | Separate ticket | Burying ground is a different free site |
| USS Constitution | Free when open | Security and ship access |
| Bunker Hill | Free when open | 294-step climb, no elevator |
| Faneuil Hall | Free when open | Actual hours and programming |
Faneuil Hall is the natural midpoint. The Great Hall is free, the NPS lists it among the no-fee sites, and Quincy Market's food colonnade solves lunch without a sit-down restaurant's patience requirement. Street performers work the plaza outside on most warm days. The Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market guide covers the food stalls and the rotunda schedule.
If the group still has energy after lunch, the North End is a short walk and delivers the Paul Revere House and Old North Church plus the pastry shops of Hanover Street. If not, turn back toward the Common and save Charlestown for another day. For a compressed version of this whole day, the one day in Boston itinerary is the adult-paced equivalent.
Day 2: Aquarium, Harbor, And The Waterfront
Choose Aquarium entry for Day Two if it matches the children’s interests, then add a short boat activity only if time and energy permit. The Aquarium is on Central Wharf near Long Wharf. Duck Tours use three different boarding locations; only a selected Aquarium departure keeps the outing in this neighborhood.
Aquarium interests and visit length vary by child. The verified base ticket covers the Aquarium, with film and whale-watching products separate. Compare age, residency, benefit and access eligibility before purchase rather than assuming all out-of-region visitors receive no discounts. The Aquarium guide explains the distinctions.
Choose either the one-hour Long Wharf harbor-history cruise or an eighty-minute Duck Tour if your family wants a boat activity. Duck Tours spend about twenty minutes on the Charles and return to the selected city boarding point. Compare actual ages, interests, boarding access and party quotes; no format suits every child equally.
Choose one boat format rather than assuming both are needed after the Aquarium. Check actual departure availability, boarding point, check-in and cancellation terms before fixing the day. A boat seat is not guaranteed to be available when you leave the museum.
A free alternative if the budget is stretched: the Harborwalk. The Rose Kennedy Greenway runs car-free from the North End to the Wharf with splash fountains in summer, and the carousel is a known quantity. NOAA's tide data for Boston Harbor shows a mean tidal range of about 9.49 feet, an unusually large swing for a major US city, so the waterfront's look changes dramatically between visits: shoreline exposure changes, while floating docks rise and fall with the water.
Day 3: Fenway Park, The Public Garden, And The View From Above
Choose a Fenway tour if baseball or stadium history interests the family, then allow time for the Public Garden or a Back Bay stop. Standard tours and short tours have different schedules. View Boston’s direct general entry starts at $32 plus a $3 fee at the September 2026 check, with date and age conditions; a paid view does not guarantee a happier tired child.
The standard Fenway tour lasts about an hour, meeting at Gate D at least ten minutes early. The short Gate B format has its own fifteen-minute departure schedule, not the standard tour’s schedule. Check the selected tour’s bag rules and your children’s interests. A tour is separate from game admission; the Fenway guide compares formats.

The Public Garden needs a seasonal warning: the Swan Boats are closed for the season, their own site says so verbatim, and they return in April 2027. The Garden itself is open, the Make Way for Ducklings statues are climbable and free, and the lagoon is worth seeing even with the boats docked. The Boston Common and Public Garden guide covers the rest of the greenspace, including the Common's playground and the frog pond, which becomes a spray pool in summer and an ice rink in winter.
View Boston offers indoor areas on levels fifty through fifty-two and an outdoor terrace. Check the actual dated ticket and age bands. Clouds and snow can hide the skyline, and no paid attraction guarantees to reset a tired child’s mood. Similar monthly liquid-equivalent precipitation totals do not predict the weather for your visit.
What Does A Boston Trip With Kids Actually Cost?
Budget the full family stay, food, transport and selected activities. Children eleven and under ride bus and subway free with a paying adult, but each paying traveler needs their own fare medium. Public walking is free; paid interiors and attractions use different age bands and eligibility rules.
Compare the actual age bands instead of treating every child ticket as ages three to eleven:
For a family day built around the animals, book a Franklin Park Zoo entry ticket here.
| Attraction | What to check for each child | Separate cost or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Historic interiors | Venue-specific ages and benefits | Public walk is free |
| Aquarium | Actual admission age band; infants may need a ticket | Films and whales separate |
| View Boston | Actual dated ages and promotions | Food and skyline visibility separate |
| Fenway | Selected format’s ages and bag rules | Game admission separate |
| Museum of Science | Exhibit Halls ages and benefits | Shows extra |
| Harbor-history cruise | Actual ages, including infant ticket | Food and drink extra |
CityPASS has the same attraction-choice menu for adults and children: any four of seven, with different ticket ages and prices. At the September 2026 check it is $84 adult twelve-plus and $72 ages three to eleven. Compare each child’s free admission and actual separate tickets before purchase; nine days start at first use or reservation. The pass guide compares menus.
Compare the exact hotel address, room capacity and full dated quote with your family’s needs. A waterfront or Back Bay label does not establish the journey to every stop. The stay guide and budget itinerary compare location, lodging and travel costs.
Want to compare a pass for the family? Explore CityPASS only after choosing four of seven attractions and calculating each child’s actual eligible individual prices. Nine days start at first use or reservation; free child entry can change the value. Compare Boston CityPASS options
What If It Rains, Or Someone Melts Down?
Choose an indoor backup near your actual route, checking opening times and whether the children need rest rather than another activity. Museum of Science, Public Library and View Boston are not all adjacent. The library is free but has opening hours and room-access rules; an indoor deck does not guarantee a clear view.
The Boston Public Library guide covers what a family can actually do there, which is more than most visitors expect: the courtyard, the children's room, and the map-lined staircase are all open to walk-ins. The Museum of Science is the heavy-duty backup, but go in with current expectations: the museum is mid-renovation, the Garden Walk and Insect Zoo and two other exhibits are permanently closed, and the new Public Science Common is targeted to open in late 2026. The museum states it stays open throughout the work.

Museum eligibility varies. Harvard Art Museums are free; ICA and Gardner have reserved free Thursday evenings, and MFA Third Thursday has a $5 minimum. Youth, benefit-card and access programs can apply to travelers too, while MFA Open House has residency requirements. The former Free Fun Fridays program was replaced by August Adventures; check the actual program calendar.

Meltdown management is simpler: every day in this itinerary has a natural exit. Day 1 can end at Faneuil Hall instead of the North End. Day 2 can end after the Aquarium instead of the cruise. Day 3 can end in the Public Garden instead of the Prudential. The site's rainy-day and indoor-activity guides carry longer backup lists for the washout afternoon.
Check Museum of Science Exhibit Halls entry for the actual indoor-backup date. Compare age and benefit eligibility, and budget separately for shows. Construction can change open spaces; choose a manageable visit instead of adding another activity when rest is needed. Check Museum of Science entry dates
Should You Add A Fourth Day Or A Day Trip?
A fourth day can slow the city itinerary or add a regional outing. A seasonal island ferry needs a dated outward booking and a checked return timetable and a substantial half day; a former five-ride or fare offer must not be treated as a current family quote. Check the selected island’s actual calendar before the October 12, 2026 season end.
Georges Island has Fort Warren, not Fort Independence, which is at Castle Island in South Boston. Follow fort access rules rather than encouraging children to run through uneven spaces. The islands guide explains ferries. Salem, Plymouth and additional city museum time are different alternatives; suitability depends on each child rather than a universal age cutoff.

Want a seasonal island day with enough time to explore? Choose the actual Georges or Spectacle return itinerary and check its last boat, access and family ages. This does not provide unlimited island hopping or a general five-ride family pass. Check island ferry dates and destination
Getting Around Boston With Children
The MBTA is genuinely family-friendly on price: children under 12 ride free with a paying adult on subway and bus, a 7-Day Pass is $22.50, and since 1 September 2026 one fare buys unlimited transfers within two hours. The practical rules are to use the same payment method across every leg of a trip, to check the transfer rules for the chosen payment medium, and to check weekend diversions the night before, since September and October 2026 carry rolling closures on the Green, Orange, and Red lines.
For each fare-paying traveler, use the same supported card or device on eligible legs within the transfer window. One adult’s card is not a family pass. Payment-medium and route rules differ, so check current MBTA guidance rather than assuming every cash journey costs two or three times as much.

Strollers are manageable on the system but not pampered: older downtown stations predate elevators, and Symphony station on the Green Line E branch has been closed since June with closure scheduled through spring 2029. The site's getting-around and fare-mechanics guides cover station-by-station accessibility and the card-versus-ticket rules in full.
Where To Eat With Kids On This Itinerary
Choose meals near the route, with the children’s actual preferences, allergies and timing in mind. Quincy Market, North End counters and sit-down restaurants offer different choices. Not every child wants seafood, pastries or pizza, and a guided tasting cannot automatically accommodate a picky eater or allergy.
Plan the actual dinner venue and kitchen hours around the Fenway or Back Bay activity. Food preferences vary; baked beans, chowder, cannoli and pizza are choices rather than universal child favorites. Check menus and diet requirements before reserving a food activity.

Check the public pizza walk’s dietary and access conditions before booking for the family. It lasts about two-and-a-half hours, with three slices, cannoli and water. Meet downstairs at Modern Pastry Underground; gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan diets are not accommodated. Check pizza walk dates and dietary requirements
What Time Of Year Should A Family Visit?
Choose dates around school schedules, the activities your family wants and the weather you can accommodate. July’s normal high is 82.1 °F, while winter brings snow and shorter days. Monthly precipitation totals do not establish equal rain risk or guarantee shoulder-season room savings; use actual forecasts, calendars and quotes.

Seasonal closures to plan around, all verified on the operators' own pages:
| Seasonal activity | 2026 status | Family planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Swan Boats, Public Garden | Closed for the season, returns April 2027 | Do not promise them before spring |
| Harbor Islands ferry | Season ends Monday 12 October 2026 | Check the selected island’s actual fall dates |
| Fenway Park tours | Format-specific dates and departure times | Schedule shifts on game days |
| Duck boats and harbor cruises | Warm-season schedules | Check the operator's live listing for dates |
| Museum of Science | Open through renovation | Garden Walk and Insect Zoo permanently closed |
The best time to visit Boston guide carries the full monthly breakdown, and the winter itinerary on this site is the plan for families locked into a February school week.
The one honest caveat about the weather data: the official Boston station sits at Logan Airport, on a peninsula in the harbor. It is a maritime reading, slightly cool for inland neighborhoods on a sea-breeze day, and exactly right for the waterfront hours this itinerary spends on Day 2.
Common Questions About A Boston Itinerary With Kids
boston itinerary with kids
Choose three clusters, downtown history, Aquarium/waterfront and a museum or Fenway day, leaving room to stop early. Public walking and eligible child transit are free; check actual attraction ages.
Is Boston good for a family trip?
Boston has free public routes and varied museums and activities, but distances, access and children’s interests matter. The Navy operates USS Constitution; not all trail sites are operated by NPS or free inside.
How many days do you need in Boston with kids?
Choose the pace the family needs. Three days is a useful outline; a fourth can add rest or museums without a day trip.
What is the best thing to do in Boston with toddlers?
Consider parks, an open seasonal play area or a short Aquarium visit according to the child. Check actual hours and weather; a ballpark tour is not automatically a toddler activity.
Do kids ride free on the Boston subway?
Children eleven and under ride bus and subway free with a paying adult. Each paying traveler needs their own payment medium and should use it consistently for eligible transfers.
What should we skip in Boston with kids?
Skip activities that do not fit your children’s interests, stamina or the date. Do not rule out museums by age alone: check youth entry, family programs and free eligibility before paying.
